A quick'n'dirty method is using any connection program, like
Hyperterminal, and connect manually (atdt, etc.) The modem should say
CONNECT xxxxx.... that's the speed! then hangup since Hyperterminal
won't connect you to Internet... (ath)

if you want more concise info check your modem manual for extended
report command, and enter it before atdt.
