That's simple, don't panic. Even as a newbie, I've passed through this a
number of times. The hardest step is backuping everything, but as you
said, all of your programs and documents are safe. The next steps (at
least what I did in your situation), are formatting the HD, and installing
the OS again, from scratch. I think you're right, that erasing everything
is better than installing things over the old installation. Don't
worry, I'll mail you detailed step-by-step operations.
