RE old Steel window sections. If you're really desperate for a particular
section - try calling the current manufacturers of steel windows. If you
find financial records to see who bought out what company, you may find the
new company kept the old dies or old shop drawings. I;ve found such a thing
here several times.
The old steel windows in here in new York, often look like hell, but often
very little of the steel is missing. The biggest problem is frequently
cosmetic (ie could be fixed with scraping & painting & re-caulking) but it's
a lot of labor to make them look good and at the end you still get a window
that doesn't have insulating glass or a thermal break which gives owners a
tax credit. Moreover, they fit into the frame more loosely than current
windows, by design so they do let into a certain amount of dirt along with
air. Furthermore, most clients don't want to maintain steel.
