AHA-2940UW, right?
Note that the 1.25 BIOS is a little dated; you may want to get the latest
from their web site.

In the SCSI setup (Ctrl-A), there's a set of per-device options such as
"send Start Unit command". Can you report how these are set for the drive?
Also, is this in fact a wide drive? What device IDs are you using?
[SCSI configurations can be a bit temperamental, and every scrap of
information could be important....]
