NATIONAL COUNCIL ON INDEPENDENT LIVING
URGENT! ACTION NEEDED!
FAIR HOUSING ACT UNDER ATTACK!
October 25, 1999
PROBLEM:

Rep. Walter Jones (R-NC) has introduced HR 2437, the (falsely named)
Justice in Fair Housing Act of 1999. This bill would provide an
exception from the enforcement of an accessibility construction
requirement of the Fair Housing Act for certain buildings
constructed in compliance with a local building code.

THIS MEANS THAT BUILDERS WHO FOLLOW LOCAL BUILDING CODE (WHICH
RARELY INCLUDES ACCESSIBILITY REQUIREMENTS) WILL NO LONGER HAVE
TO FOLLOW THE FAIR HOUSING ACT .

CURRENT SITUATION:
The Committee on the Constitution (a sub-committee of the Judiciary
Committee) will be holding a hearing on this bill on Thursday,
October 28, 1999 at 2PM in 2237 Rayburn House Office Building to
consider this bill.

ACTION NEEDED:
Contact the members of this sub-committee and tell them to
vote NO on H.R. 2437 (see below for the list of members)

Tell them your personal stories about the lack of accessible
housing and how the builders are aware of the Fair Housing
Act, but have chosen to ignore it.

Do all you can to get the word out about the hearing on
October 28th in Washington, DC. It will be held at 2PM in
Rayburn 2237. Encourage those who can get there to come to
the hearing. We need to fill the hearing room with people
with disabilities.

Rep. Canady (R-FL) 202/225-1252
Rep. Hyde (R-IL) 202/225-4561
