Two of my favorites are:
The Mushroom Hunter's Field Guide - Alexander Smith & Nancy Smith Weber
University of Michigan Press
Mushrooms of North America - Orson K. Miller, Jr.
E.P. Dutton
Be certain to err on the side of caution, as you are aware! Many times you
need to do spore prints and/or chemical tests to be certain of the species,
and in these cases I usually decide to pass. Puffballs are pretty easy, as
are oysters. A good guide will give a clear picture, many distinguishing
characteristics, and warnings of all similar species and possible toxicities.
Happy hunting
