According to an article in Scientific American,("High Fertility in
Sub-Saharan Africa") the invention of the plow made lifetime monogamy and
patrilineal decent an economic necessity.

Because of tetse flies limiting the availability of draft animals,
sub-Saharan Africa never adopted this mode of mating and inheritance.  Thus
female chastity is not such a big deal and polygamy predominates.
