Hi,

There are a few pretty good screen readers for text based variants of UNIX.
I use something called screader on Linux. Even better is the amazingly
great program called emacspeak written by TV Raman.

Emacspeak is a fully talking version of emacs written by one of the world's
foremost experts on auditory user interfaces. Raman uses the software
himself and is constantly making little fixes.

If you're unfamiliar with emacs, you should look any of the myriad web sites
dedicated to its use and customization. In short, I can only describe it as
the operating system which disguises itself as a text editor.

If you need to use X-Windows, then you'll have more trouble. So far, we
don't know of any X emulators which work at all well with JFW (or any other
MS Windows based screen reader). There is a project to develop a screen
reader for X called UltraSonics. It's work being done by a terrific bunch
of guys but, alas, they haven't gotten it to nearly a usable state.

I hoped this helped. You might also check out the blinux-list. It's
dedicated to Linux use by blind people. I think there's a link to it on the
Red Hat web site.

Have fun,

Hello.
Does anyone know of a screen reader that works with Unix? I know that
we can use JAWS on a Windows operating system and telnet into a Unix box
but I didn't know if there was a screen reader out yet that works
directly on a Unix box. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!
