An article in todays "West County Times" (3 August 1999, p. A4)
newspaper discusses a meeting of organic food industry leaders in
nearby Oakland, California. The organic food industry leaders want
to avoid what the article describes as "biological contamination"
of organic crops, from genetic engineered crops. However, they
report that:

"...it's all but certain that small amounts of genetically modified
material will unintentionally get into some of their [organic]
products."

One of the ways the above can occur is via cross-pollination of
organic with genetically engineered crops. The article claims that
50 varieties of genetically engineered crops are approved by the
US Dept. of Agriculture, and genetically altered soybeans,
potatoes, and corn are widely planted in the US.
