The fundamental difference between passive and active screens is in the
number of switches that are used to light the crystals (LCD). Whereas the
passive only uses one switch per column, the active gives EVERY crystal its
own switch. This increases the speed of pin-pointing a specific X-Y
coordinate on the screen. The number of components in an actice LCD matrix is
at least three times that of the passive matrix thus yielding better
resolution and response time. Of course they are more expensive than passive.
