Thanks Philippe for the response.  This was my first thought, however, when
the computer "boots" up,  a msg  on the screen indicates that the OS detects
the CD-ROM.  More importantly,  I have deleted the earlier CD-ROM driver and
d/l a newer version of it, installed it and the problem still persists.  I
believe that the lesser of two evils would be to replace the CD-ROM drive
with another one of better quality. Besides, this drive makes a lot of noise
when it operates. :-)
