There is no default speed on CD Media, but there is a rated writing speed.
If the CDR's do not have a rated writing speed on them I usually default to
4x speed. I have written some 6x CDR's at 8x speed by mistake, one was a
coaster and the other was good. I was unable to tell the difference just by
looking at the media. I bought some 80 min. Memorex CDR and wrote them at
4x speed successfully because they didn't have a writing speed rated on
them.
