I've read a bit lately about the value of the individual amino acids
themselves.  For example, (I'm going from memory here) glutamine is been
shown to increase growth hormone production, as well as immune system
function.  There's been a book or two published recently touting the value
of carnitine too.

I think the old notion that protein is only needed in the minimum quantity
necessary to repair tissue damage is fast becoming outdated.

The more recent research confirms (perhaps that's too strong -- suggests)
protein is needed in far higher quantities than previously thought (at
least my mainstream nutritionists)
