Alan askd a few questions, but left the list before I could write an
answer:

In a sense, it is effective because this way, cows eat their natural
diet (grass) and I eat mine (cows). Cows have a digestive system that
enables them to digest large volumes of plant matter (they have four
stomachs, etc). Of course, we could plant fruit trees instead, or eat
cooked beans and rice. That would be more efficient in a sense, but
not ideal healthwise IMO.

Much less that by NOT eating this 1 kg of animal protein ;-)
