A tenant group in the Graham, an 1891 victorian apartment building at 89th
and Madison, has filed for an injunction against the schools owner - St.
David's School - and the Landmarks Preservation Commission.
The issue? The tenants contest the Landmarks Commission's decision to permit
St. David's to ... replace the original wooden windows with the usual modern
crud. The tenants like the old windows (and may also like annoying the
owner). This is an interesting departure from the business-as-usual,
rip-em-out philosophy that the preservation establishment in New York has
bought into (or turned a blind eye to). And, as in many such cases, it comes
from an unexpected source.
