Actually, HSP (winmodem is like saying Kleenex Vs. tissue) "software" modems
work fine or best in many situations. Actually, my ISP, Earthlink (second
only to AOL), found that a v.90 Zoom HSP PCI modem connected at the fastest
rate over many other HSP and all DSP (hardware modems) that they tested.
This also matches my tests.  If you have a fast CPU, e.g. 200 anything or
better and do not play games on the internet, HSP modems work just as well
as a DSP modem and can save you significant money. Connection speed is also
dependent on chipset on the modem and what kind of modems your ISP is using.
Best to contact you ISP and find out from them which chipset and/or modem is
best for them.
