I have a choice of two scanners at a good price. Software is NOT
 an issue.
The first is a Microtek ScanMaker E3, which is a 24 bit color, I
cannot find the optical resolution and the maximum resolution
 appears to be 4800 dpi.
The second is a Visioneer PaperPort 6100B, which is a 36 bit
 color, 600 x 1200 dpi optical resolution and 2400 x 2400 maximum
 resolution.

The use will be low volume scanning of photographs (some to be
printed), text scanning to Word Processor and scanning to
decrease the amount of paper documents.

I'll take any opinions good or bad.

 John Collins
