Hello PCBuild,

Finally, a problem on my PC...

Recently, my CD-ROM started acting strangely. The disks that had no
problems before, have errors when read. The errors usually occur from
the very insertion, and if the first read goes OK drive works, if not
- it shutdowns, waits some 2s, starts again, tries to read - few times
- and gives up. Sometimes the disk is not acknowledged at all - drive
acts like no disk was inserted. (again, all disks are OK, tested with
another system)

The Win98 frequently locks up if any CD is in drive.

After hot reboot from one of those lockups BIOS does not POST and says:
"Primary Hard Disk Fail", while CD-ROM light is glowing. Shutting down
and waiting 30 sec. cures the problem, if the CD is removed
immediately on power-up.

I don't want to bring the system in for repairs... Suggestions on
the cure, anyone?

"The" Drive : Creative IDE 48x max, as slave to WD 8.6G.
  System : Celeron 400 on BX6/2, 32M RAM, running Win98.
