EDO RAM is usually 5V, Buffered SDRAM can be either 5 or 3.3V and UnBuffered SDRAM is 3.3V. There are also timing differences between Buffered and Unbuffered SDRAM.

SDRAM is "supposed" to be identified by the bios. There is a serial eeprom or ROM on the memory board with ID info, including timing. However, your board may have been too early to properly identify the latest chips. You might check for a BIOS upgrade at packard Bell's web site.
