Got it! Turns out you have to jumper both the Master and Slave pins -
*then* use a DDO or an alternate controller CCA. Once I jumpered both
pairs of pins on the drive jumper block, I was able to get into the
system BIOS and - more importantly - I was able to load up Western
Digital's EZ Drive DDO. I can still offer the client the option of
using the faster EIDE Controller CCA, too.
Whew! I knew this looked like a jumper problem - but this one really
gave me a run for my money. Guess I earned another stripe! @:>)
