Are there some pitfalls of in-field internet access that I should be
aware of when researching these devices and an appropriate computer? Is
the technology really "there" for stable wireless computer link-ups?
Does the ISP selection come into play here as well?
--------------
Your chief concerns are going to be availability oe cellular/PCS service in
the "filed" locations you refer to. You might have to go to a satellite
phone solution if budget and need so dictate. The laptop will be pretty
standard-issue. Any high-quality digital camera will have a
USB/serial/Parallel cord to download the photos to the laptop. However, the
modem will be a key component. It will obviously have to be cellular-ready.
Once you have decided on your wireless provider, I would speak with them
about specific models of phones with data output ports and then contact the
larger modem manufacturers (3COM, Hayes, ETC.) about compatibility with
certain phones and get their recommendations...
I would be interested in your findings, as my company is also contemplating
a field-to-net solution. Please post any useful finds to the group if it is
not too much trouble...
