I believe it's a brand name for external drives that plug into a
parallel port. That's likely to make it slow -- okay for backup, but
doubtful for program execution -- and susceptible to poor cables or
misconfigured parallel ports, but easy to move from machine to machine.
An AltaVista search on "+backpack +drive" finds hits for external
floppy drives, hard drives, CD-ROM drives and tape drives, all under
the "BackPack" brand name.
