This is in general bad practice with inkjet printers. Most of them have an
area where the head is parked when powered down that seals the ink
cartridge to prevent it from drying out. If the power to the printer is
shut off via any method other than its power switch, the head may not be
parked so that the cartridge is sealed. I know this to be true for some
models of Canon inkjets, especially the low end ones. These printers will
automatically park the head if not used for a while and will also shut
themselves down when not used for a while. It is safest to leave the
printer plugged into an outlet that is on all the time and use the
auto-shutdown feature to make sure the cartridge is sealed if you forget to
turn the printer off manually.
