I have an Aztech K56 MDP3858SP-E internal modem with two
problems:

1. It will not connect at a higher speed than 31,200

2. Downloading of mail is slow.

I also have an external Microcom OfficePorte modem that connects
most of the time at 33,600. This modem downloads mail in a
steady flow where the Aztech hesitates after each message,
something I can monitor with DunMon, and it is overall about twice
as fast in downloading mail.

When browsing the internet or downloading files with either the
browser or an FTP program I find the Aztech modem considerably
faster of the two modems.

My ISP has different telephone numbers for regular modems and
K56 modems, but it does not matter which number I use, the result
(31,200) is the same.

I have received this advanced setting string from the ISP for the
Aztech modem:

AT&F+MS=56,1,34000,40000

but that does not work, as a matter of fact I receive the DUN error
630 when I use this string.

As part of my troubleshooting I have disabled nearly all programs in
startup as recommended in MS KB article Q190554

I was first told by one support person to use
"AT&F+MS=56,1,28800,40000", but another representative told me
that very few modems worked with the "28800" setting.

My knowledge of modem commands is limited, but I believe that
the AT&F command just resets the modem to the factory settings,
and the modem works as expected fine with or without this reset.
However, any combination of +MS= will return the 630 error
message. I understand that the MS settings determine the
connect speed and that the last two numbers are the min. and
max. speeds

I'm running on a Win98 system, the modem was automatically
detected and drivers were found and loaded by Win98.

I enclose a section of the modemlog to show a failed dialup:

--------------------------------

I noticed that the initional +MS= command was "K"56 but including
the "K" in the advanced setting makes no difference.

My ISP seems to believe that solving the connect speed problem
will also solve the mail problem which I don't understand. His
explanation is that the modem is too fast and that it constantly
tries to renegotiate the line speed. I thought that once the
connection was established (at 31,200) the modem would not try to
increase the speed during the session.

I'm running out af ideas and would appreciate your suggestions.
