Is it possible that this stuff has not necessarily been sitting around in
the colon for a long time, but has been recently mobilised from cells where
it has been stored?

So it might be old material in the sense that it has been in the body for a
long time, but still only recently appeared in the colon. Could this be a
likely scenario involved in producing smelly, old-looking stools?
