David:

First check the Conner's drive select jumpers; the jumper
for master/slave is CD (on for master, off for slave).
Since it is on a two pair jumper block, it is easy to put
the jumper across the wrong posts.

Then, check the IDE pins. Conner's pins are easy to
bend so there may be a bent pin. Also, check that
the IDE cable has its colored wire on Pin #1 which
follows the conventional "towards-the-power-connector"
orientation.

Finally, go into CMOS setup, get into the USER definable
settings for the drive and manually set the hard drive
parameters. My old Conner 170MB was a CP30174A
which is: 903 cylinders -- 8 heads -- 46 sectors.

A great piece of software to detect IDE drives is IDEID
(ver. 3.0) from Micro House. The program queries IDE
hard disk firmware for drive information. HIGHLY
RECOMMENDED (I keep it on my Boot Disk). It's FREE
and tightly coded. Get it at:

Be advised that Conner drivers are fussy about who they are
matched up with. Better to leave it as a solo Master for your
purposes. Seagate bought Conner out; get support there.

If the above doesn't work: Put the Conner back into the 486
and just Laplink (or INTERLNK) your data off the drive. HTH.
