Mike,
I remember this image, but cannot place it. I recall this to be a much more
prevalent theme than one might think. Hermes(the original one from Greek
mythology) had a son by Aphrodite by name Hermaphroditus. I don't recall
the details but I do remember the name "Bearded Aphrodite". [Also, another
son of Hermes was Pan, the half man-half goat. Thoth, the Egyptian version
of Hermes was half man- half Ibis. By the way, although after the reign of
Imhotep, (and Brian you need to know this: the Pharaoh widely recognized as
the "first Architect"), a significant other to Hermes ( I forget her name)
was known for being the originator and founder of all temples.]
Perhaps, as my Spanish art history teacher would explain "woman were just
more hair-suit" back then. Along those same lines (excuse me for being
off-color here) Howard Stern said: "Could you imagine Bella (D,NY) naked. I
bet she'd look like she had Buckwheat and Don King in a headlock."
Best,
Leland
