I teach adults, not teens, so the analogy may need to be
modified....

I explain it in conjuction with using an application.  The hard
drive is the filing cabinet that stores the "master" copy or
original document.

When the application "opens" the document, it is like taking
the original and making a duplicate on the copier, putting
the original back in the file cabinet, and then using the
duplicate as a "working" copy.

After making all the changes, the working copy is put into the
filing cabinet and replaces the old original which is thrown away.
