Recently read "Cod" by mark kurlansky- kind of a " How dried fish conquered
the western Hemisphere" story- 200 pgs of history w/ 40 pgs of recipes.

Re: Captain Smith- after he tired of fishing he would evidently top of his
hold w/Amerind slaves for Spain.
Re: the Pilgrims- they showed up @ Cape Cod w/ no fishing gear or the
know-how to use it had the had it.
Re: Thanksgiving- evidently it wasn't so much that the Indians were helping
out the Pilgrims w/ handouts but more that the Pilgrims quickly became adept
at identifying & raiding food storage caches.
