In defense of the "architect's uniform," I should point out that khakis
and a blue shirt won't gross out your boss/client in the meeting room, and
won't be a big loss when you rip them going over the sidewalk bridge after
the meeting.  I worry about restoration architects in linen or silk;
they're more likely to make field decisions from across the street.
