Check the manual/HP website  for the Printer Self-Test - it should be
something like "Hold down the Line Advance while switching On", or a
"hidden" button.  (It doesn't even have to be connected to the computer.)

If every other line is still struck out, then it is a hardware problem
with the printer.

If the Self-Test is correct, then the problem is probably software in the
computer (A hardware problem would probably affect every character the
same.).  It could be a corrupted driver, or just confusion caused by using
the dot matrix printer driver on the DeskJet.
