Hi Tracy,
Do you or your friend have Norton Utilities, preferably Version 3 but
Version 2 fully updated would suffice? With the Norton Rescue Disks
that you can make from Norton Utilities comes Norton Disk Doctor (NDD)
that will run in DOS. NDD should be able to relocate the data to good
Sectors. Much better than Windows Scandisk.
Since you have a functioning computer, you could download the Trial
Version of Norton Utilities, make a set of Rescue Disks, and then use
the Rescue Disks to run NDD on your friend's computer. Here's the Link
