Because the Dells and Compaqs and such can buy components in bulk,
you will not save any money on your initial purchase if you build a
machine yourself. And you won't have their support departments to
turn to if it breaks.
What you will have is a non-proprietary system, where you know the
exact model/quality of each component, and which you can
easily/cheaply upgrade in future -- and a challenging hobby, which
isn't what everyone wants.
