Missed the start of this thread but I do have some info on
hyperbarics. Currently chambers are accepting patients for wound
care. They have to pass criteria that the wounds have not healed in
spite of ordinary medical care. These are usually people with
diabetes, severe peripheral vascular disease or injuries secondary to
radiation therapy for cancer.
Patients are placed in the chamber and "dive" to a depth of 45 ft
(which is 2 1/2 atmospheres). They are then placed on oxygen for
defined periods. This hyperoxygenates the blood and plasma. Plasma
does not hyperoxygenate at sea level. Main side effect to observe for
is oxygen toxicity (rare) and relieved by taking the patient off
oxygen. The results of healing are pretty impressive.
California seems to be leading the area with use of hyperbarics for
everything from healing plastic surgery incisions to improving
athletic performance.
Regards, Deb
