Re: First and second floor shutters, I believe you are correct. I have
encountered several 18thC houses in Albany, Greene, and Schoharie Counties
which were "spruced up" in the 19th C with operable louvered shutters on the
second floor, but the original panelled shutters were left on the first floor.
On my own Albany Co. house, the existing shutters were louvered on cast iron
hinges which were fitted with a small nub which kept the shutters in the open
position unless lifted and turned to close. These were mounted on non-original
exterior casings. I removed one casing and found the remains of the original
(1796) wrought pintles, which likely means strap hinge, with a panelled
shutter.
