That is a major problem with caloric restriction as a route to weight
loss-- the body's lowering of its base metabolism, making desired results
more and more difficult to attain. One theory is to confuse the body by
restricting calories for several days then have a "binge" day (500
calories or so greater than the daily rate of the preceding 3 or 4 days).
This fits with Art Devany's depiction of the caveman lifestyle as
nonlinear. Not only does the body achieve it lowest body fat via a
nonlinear exercise regimen (the other key aspect of this regimen being
"intense bursts" of exercise that recruit the maximum number of
fast-twitch muscle fibers), but with a nonlinear diet regimen too (several
days of caloric restriciton interspersed with feast days). In a way, this
also fits the Heller's Carbohydrate Addicts Diet program, though this
program builds the nonlinearity into the day-- with 1 anything-goes meal
surrounded by modest caveman-style meals (the theory being that the body's
insulin response has two stages-- the first secretion occurs when the body
detects the ingestion of food and the release of insulin is based the
average response the body has been making, the second secretion fine-tuned
to handle the size and carb content of the meal at hand; if most of one's
meals during the day are caveman, then the first response will tend to be
low, thereby curbing fat storage).

Cheers!
