We were blessed in southern New Jersey with a great number of abandoned
Victorian and Federal period houses, within bike trip distance, which offered
"spooky house hunting" as a frequent activity. Many were filled with the
abandoned artifacts of the last family. One of my earliest "cool" finds was a
copy of the Philadelphia Inquirer announcing the Lindberg flight - this was ca
1954. Of course it also was a hoot to find out that other kids would be going
to a particular house, getting there before them, and scaring the bejeezus out
of them. This activity became old for me when I was bull-whipped by Henry
Hocknell at the age of 12.
