The point that many of these peanut allergy bashers are
missing is that you can't just refuse to eat the peanuts.
They say, if you're allergic, don't eat'em - not realizing
that everyone around you who is eating peanuts now has
peanut oil on their hands and faces and napkins, that
they've touched the little fold-down table in front of them
and the armrest and the lavatory door with those
peanut-oily hands . . . then the person with peanut allergy
touches one of these things, breaks out in hives and starts
wheezing.

There was an article in the Houston Chronicle about peanut
allergy in classrooms this week, and they never made that
point either. Parents in one school were being told they
couldn't put peanut butter sandwiches in their children's
lunches because one child in the school was
anaphylactically allergic to peanuts. The parents were
outraged - and the children wanted their PB&J sandwiches.
The point about contamination of surroundings was never
addressed.
