I just learned that I, too am the beneficiary of a previously blazed
trail. I thought it was pretty remarkable that the staff was trained to
administer epi-pens, seemed well-prepared for the allergy situation and
as I posted previously, handled our first allergy encounter with much
class.
I was chatting with a mother of one of Seth's schoolmates, and when I
mentioned how impressed I have been, she told me that a friend of hers
with a multiple food allergic child had already been "down this road" at
this school. My friend said that it wasn't such a breeze for this woman
and her child. This child is now in the sixth grade, so this all
happened years ago. In our small district, the kindergarten and some of
the first grade are in a separate school (a delightful arrangement, I
might add), so that child hasn't been in our school for quite a while.
I do not know how many other allergic children have been through in the
intervening years, but it is impressive to know that they made the
changes necessary to keep allergic children safe, and have maintained
the level of awareness. Just a little good news in the rough and tumble
world of "allergy parents".
