Just read a book today that strongly supports the Paleo diet.  The theory
here claims that "pyruvic acid in the blood is responsible for obesity,
because it prevents the utilization of fatty acids and blood sugar, and
causes them to be stored as excess tissue.  The solution is infallible IF
PROPERLY ADHERED TO.  Limiting vegetarian foods lessens the amount of
pyruvic acid in the blood;
fatty acids and blood sugar are used more efficiently, and excess fat
deposition does not occur.  As fatty acids are oxidized and utilized for
energy, and fat stored in the body is released to replace the used up blood
fatty acids, fat storage is normalized, fat deposits are used, weight is
lost - and, above all, health is restored.  Simply, all that is needed to
reduce overweight people and bring them to a normal weight with 12 percent
body fat is to remove pyruvic acid-forming carbohydrate foods from their
diet."

According to this theory, one should eat only meat, fowl, and seafood, in
any quantity desired, except for the addition of one normal portion of a
non-pyruvic containing fruit or vegetable with each meal.  These
non-pyruvic containing items are white potatoes (baked, french fried, hash
brown), sweet potatoes, a small bunch of grapes, a slice of watermelon,
rice, a half grapefruit, a banana, a pear, raspberries, and blueberries.
Allowable beverages are water, plain black coffee, and plain tea.

The maintenance part of this life-long diet includes eggs, natural cheese,
plus  a vegetable AND a fruit included in one of the 3 meals in a day.

For all of those Calorie-Restrictors out there this book also stresses that
the body on low-calorie diets is in a state of inanition, i.e., it is
exhausted from malnourishment...and if CR diets are adhered to for too
long, the wasting away of precious vital tissue can become very injurious
to health!

It all sounds similar to Paleo, doesn't it?  Nuts were never mentioned.
The book is "Steak Lovers' Diet" by Melvin Anchell, MD.  I don't think it
is available in bookstores, but I ordered it from 1-800-728-2288, if anyone
is interested in reading it.  Delivery took at least a month.
