I have read of a neat security program (sorry, I forgot the source)
that hides itself on the hard drive (like a virus). If you don't use
the password, it assumes that it has been stolen, dials up the
software company, and hollers "Help, I've been stolen - trace this
telephone line". Seeing as the police haven't come knocking at your
door, I don't think that is the problem, but if something like it
(automatic updater?) was malfunctioning, it could cause multiple
redials. You could try setting the number of automatic redials to
zero or one.
I have heard rumors of data mining viruses that could try to export your
data to a variety of websites.
