I once had a very close friend who was probably a functional manic
depressive. No fear of death, completely unconventional, wits as sharp as a
razor and a pretty fair auto mechanic to boot. He could push himself harder
than any human I've ever known, and ran ultra long distance races (100 km
and up) for amusement. He killed himself a few years ago, apparently having
decided it just wasn't fun anymore.
