I think what you are describing is structural terra cotta. Find out who
would have been producing terra cotta in the local area at the time of the
construction. Also, find out what infrastructure there was for convenient
moving of masonry materials at the time of construction. Depending on the
color of the tiles you may be able to narrow down regions where the clay
came from.
