On CA West coast visited Stanford, Berkeley, SF, Palo Alto & spent weekend in
mountain cabin north of Yosemite. Zero to 6000 feet. Impression was that there
are several baseline differences between preservation in NYC and Bay Area. No
sidewalk bridges but pipe with 2 x 12 planking. A few hanging rigs, but mostly
pipe. Buildings are clean in comparison to NYC, assuming not much masonry
cleaning is called for. Precipitation patterns differ, rain for average 4
months of winter, summer months dry. Not much evidence of freeze thaw cycling.
A lot of EFS architecture. Enjoyed the chapel at Stanford, the tower at
Berkeley, bought a Gertrude Stein book, and thought the generating windmills
fanciful. Regret not taking botany identification books. While there read a
biography of an early Nebraska settler, Old Jules.
