Well, I guess the KISS (keep it simple, stupid) principle applies.  Looks
like my hard drive problems are caused by a loose connector.  I guess it was
just loose enough that with the heat build up expansion caused it to fail
and then work again when the temps had gone down a little.  Connector was
just a little loose.  Thanks to all who responded.
