I would seriously consider going dual-processor for this -- and that means
Intel.
You may still be able to find a few dual Socket 7 motherboards around,
especially from Tyan.
If you decide to go for a single CPU, any can be a good choice. Cyrix
seems to handle IDE particularly well, and FPU pipelining is rarely needed on
a server.
Server performance is likely to benefit most from lots of RAM, HD
throughput (SCSI generally preferred over IDE), and large L2 cache (so
PII/PIII over Celeron).
