My Father just purchased the 5050 at a local retailer here in NJ. It runs
great for the price, but I have to say that it is slower than my Pentium 233
MMX. It may be due to the video, but I just think the Celeron 333 is a
fairly
slow chip.

While the original Celeron (266 and 300) got bad press for its lack of
performance, this was due to the total lack of L2 cache in the CPU. The new
generation of Celerons (300a and 333) have 128K of L2 cache that runs at full
CPU speed (not 1/2 CPU speed as in the PII). Even though it has only 1/4 the
cache as a PII, the fact the cache runs twice as fast makes up for it, and it
runs just as fast as a PII at the same clock speed (actually just a hair
faster in most apps).
With its price being much cheaper than a PII, it's a bargain (plus the fact
that it overclocks extremely well doesn't hurt either).
Just my .02 worth,
Peter Hogan
