Dear George:
I hope the following will help you to unravel the mysteries of the "Windows
Protection Fault."

<smile> Nothing can ruin a happy computer faster than a misbehaving system.

Sincerely,

Frank Suszka

A Windows protection error occurs when a virtual
device driver (VxD) fails to load correctly prior to
                loading the Windows 95
                desktop.

The following procedures may resolve the Windows
                protection error:

                    1. Start the computer in Safe mode. If the error
does not occur in Safe mode, then go through a
vanilla boot process. (Also, see Fax On Demand
                    Document #913022)
                            Rename CONFIG.SYS to
                            CONFIG.OLD .
                            Rename AUTOEXEC.BAT to
                            AUTOEXEC.OLD .
                            Rename WIN.INI to WIN.OLD .
                            Empty the StartUp folder.
                            In SYSTEM.CB add
                            "drivers=mmsystem.dll" to the [boot]
                            section add "mouse=*vmouse" to the
                            [386enh] section.
                            Rename SYSTEM.INI to
                            SYSTEM.OLD .
                            Copy SYSTEM.CB to SYSTEM.INI .
                    2. Reinstall Windows 95.
                    3. Make sure that the computer's CMOS settings
                    are correct.

If the error still occurs, it probably is caused by faulty
                hardware.
