  Most of the 2940 series are built around the 7880 controller chip.
The AU is the exception, using the 7860.

  A vanilla 2940 can do "Fast SCSI-2", up to 10MB/s.  An "x1" CD
device is at 150KB/s; most current recorders write at x2 (300KB/s) or
x4 (600KB/s), so this is plenty fast enough for a CD-R.
  What it might not be fast enough for is a SCSI hard drive.  The
2940U doubles maximum speed to "Ultra SCSI", 20 MB/s.  The 2940W
(possibly discontinued in favour of the UW) doubles maximum speed to
"Wide SCSI", 20 MB/s, and increases available device IDs from 7 to
15 [upper 8 must be Wide devices].
  The 2940UW provides: Ultra like the 2940U, Wide like the 2940W, and
UltraWide, combining the two techniques to get 40 MB/s.

  These are all good cards, but you might also look at Diamond's
FirePort 20 and 40.  The latter is a nice choice if you want to use a
mix of internal and external devices, and need to provide Wide
support internally.
