I will post my experiences, since I do alot of this myself...not the final
word since I am not a hard drive expert....

Usually when a drive autodetects there is a good chance it is salvageable.
But I have encountered a drive that does exactly what what the explaination
says and I cannot get it fdisk or format...If it autodetects and fdisks,
then it should be able to format....

seems like this could be remedied through a maintenance process...but I have
never encountered or fixed such an animal....

unless the drive was in a propietary system..ie Compaq, Acer, then you need
to get with a service center and supply them with a serial number of an unit
from the manufacturer....if it was in the open market, especially OEM, then
probably you can get it under a warranty situation....

no argument here, I have tried this and only gotten a ton of junk...on the
flip side, I have offered junk and represented as junk and gotten more money
that logic would suggest I should.....go figure....
Try the newsgroup misc.forsale.storage....you get better stuff for a very
good price if you bargain shop....much cheaper than auction sites...
